The Divided Ground by Alan Taylor is subtitled Indians, Settlers, and the Northern Borderland of the American Revolution. In 1761, at a boarding school in New England, a young Mohawk Indian named Joseph Brant met Samuel Kirkland, the son of a colonial clergyman. Thus began a long friendship and intense relationship that would redefine North America. At first they were close friends, later bitter foes. Kirkland served American expansion as a missionary and agent, promoting Indian conversion and dispossession. Brant's future found him defending an Indian borderland nestled between the British in Canada and the Americans. This is the dramatic story of dual borders. By restricting Indians in reservations, the Americans sought to control their northern boundary with the British Empire which lingered in Canada. The borderland soon became a divided ground.
