The encountered dangers on the uncharted mountain terrain of the Andes, ravages of malnutrition, untrustworthy guides, and disease. In addition, once finding the cinchona tree they had to smuggle seeds and seedlings out of Peru and Bolivia. The book is scientific adventure along with historical mystery.
