The Sun King's Garden by Ian Thompson is subtitled Louis XlV, AndréLe Nôtre and The Creation of the Gardens of Versailles. In addition to being a warmonger and autocrat, Louis XlV may also have been history's most fanatical gardener. At Versailles, 12 miles outside of Paris, France's "Sun King" created not only Europe's most lavish palace, but, beginning in 1661, the most extensive gardens the Western World had seen. The current domain of Versailles now covers 1,890 acres but in its heyday under Louis, the Grand Parc covered 19,800 acres. This book lavish illustrations accompany the knowledgable and detailed text covering the history and grandeur of Versailles gardens.
