This is a good clean and solid hardcover with dust jacket. Circa 1960's Modern Library. This copy is good inside and out. NOTE: in-between title pages and first blank page there is showing separation between the two pages exposing the binding under, see photo, BUT the pages are still tight to binding and seen on other place in binding. The inside pages are very clean with only a hint of light natural tanning from age. Green hardcover boards under jacket are very good and clean with only a hint of shelf wear. The accompanying dust jacket is very good for age, showing light shelf wear but very good overall. Modern library logo illustration front and back endpapers and on this copy is you remove and look inside the dust jacket there is a lost of Modern Library titles as was the feature on Modern Library dust jackets of the period. Crown octavo book size or 5" x 8" with 341 pages.

The book is considered a standard for biographical history and and the author's most noteworthy book. he evaluates the lives and times of Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, Dr. Thomas Arnold of Rugby, and General Charles George (Chinese) Gordon.
