This is a very good hardcover with dust jacket. 1966 Crescent Books. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. NOTE: there is a gift inscription from previous owner on first blank page AND owners library stamp neatly embossed bottom corner title page. Rest of inside pages are still crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight, bound in fine sewn binding for durability. Red hardcover boards under jacket are also very good with only a hint of shelf wear. The accompanying dust jacket is still clean and shiny with only very light shelf wear. Super octavo book size or 8" x 10" with 255 pages and illustrated photographic endpapers front and back.

There are 187 illustrations which include 56 plates in color which reproduce some of the greatest examples of French painting, architecture, furniture and decorating. The books narrative is concerned with the daily life of the King, the Court and the Government during the period of France's apogee in military power and artistic achievement. She discussed the building of the palace itself and the creation of the elaborate works of art. She also describes Louis' love affairs, the affair of the poisons, Lord Portland's embassy, and the marriage of the Duchess of Bourgogne. The lavish illustrations and gripping narrative mirror aristocratic society and artistic splendor of France in her Golden Age.
