The Story of Mankind is a book written and illustrated by Dutch-American journalist, professor, and author Hendrik Willem van Loon. Originally published in 1921, it was awarded the Newbery Medal for an outstanding contribution to children's literature in 1922 which was the first year the Newbery Medal was awarded.

Written for his children, The Story of Mankind tells in brief chapters the history of Western civilization. It begins with primitive man and covers the development of literature, art, architecture and more. It reviews the rise of major religions and how the modern nation-states were formed. Delightful illustrations by the author accompany the engaging narrative.
