Lost At Sea An American Tragedy by Patrick Dillon is the story of two ill-fated crabbing vessels who docked at Anacortes, Washington, and left on a 10 day trip to Dutch Harbor, Alaska but never returned. The Americus and The Altair were state-of-the-art vessels that carried 14 crew, fathers, sons, brothers and friends. The trip to Dutch Harbor was to begin the 3 month crab season harvest in the Bering Sea. 11 days later, on Valentines Day, the overturned hull of the Americus was found adrift. Its sister ship, the Altair had disappeared all together. The seas were calm and they were only 24 miles from Dutch Harbor. There had been no distress call. In the book the author recalls the treacherous conditions fishermen face in the Bering Sea. He explores the lives left behind in the tragedy and traces the two year investigation by the Coast Guard. In addition, he tells the story of a grieving mother crusade to pass safety legislation that could save lives. it is a moving portrait of courage and love and the toll the sea can take.
