To Serve The Greatest Number by Walt Crowley is subtitled A History of Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound. It is the sage of how a few hundred ordinary citizens from Seattle area granges, unions, and cooperatives joined a group of idealistic doctors and nurses to transform American healthcare.
On Jan. 1, 1947, Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound began delivering a new kind of healthcare. Consumers paid flat monthly dues for care. Board of Trustees was elected and bought bonds to fund new facilities. Doctors and Nurses devoted time to both treating illness AND promoting wellness. They all believed healthcare was a right and they pledged to serve the greatest number. The medical establishment plotted against them and people scoffed. But they survived and grew. This is the story of how they started and how they succeeded and grew.
