This edition of The Lisle Letters has been edited by Muriel St. Clare Byrne and selected and arranged by Bridget Roland. It includes a forward by Hugh Trevor-Roper. G.R. Elton wrote in The London Review of Books that is was " one of the most extraordinary historical works to be published in the century.... a vast tapestry of Tudor life." This edition is a one-volume abridgment of the acclaimed six volumes. The Lisle Letters were assembled originally in search of evidence to be used in the trial for treason of Arthur Plantagenet, Lord Lisle. But apart from the drama, the letters bring us a glimpse of day-to-day Tudor concerns. They were written from 1533-1540. The letters reveal history about the education of the children, management of estates, legal battles, sports and even the pets they owned.
