Both authors are botanists that take readers along the path of the Lewis and Clark Expedition day by day. They focus on the plants new to science in 1804-1806 but also tell the story of the expedition. They described the plants that Lewis observed and collected. Each species in the book is appears in sequence of its first appearance, with color photos, botanical info, and cultural info about how Native Americans or the expedition used it. The book is lavishly illustrated with beautiful color illustrations of the plants along with the detailed text.
