This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with accompanying very good slipcase. 1974 The Heritage Club Special Edition. In this special edition you will find each page is printed on one side and doubled-over to give each page a "blank" back side, uncut as designed. Illustrations were drawn in colour and gold by Arthur Szyk and engraved in London by Sun Engraving Co. The design of the text and page as bound was under the direction of Ernest Ingham at Fanfare Press, London.
This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out NOTE: previous owners name neatly written bottom edge first blank page, see photo. Rest of the pages inside are still crisp and clean w no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. The hardcover boards are also very good with only a hint of shelf wear and feature Persian design front and back. The accompanying slipcase is very good, showing light shelf wear but solid. Larger hardcover, imperial octavo book size or 8" x 11"
This edition from The Heritage Club is the translated text by Edward Fitzgerald from Persian to English . It is a selection of quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam, the Astronomer-Poet of Persia. The beautiful illustrations throughout are by Arthur Szyk. This is a fine edition for any student of Persian history and poetry, although much speculation as to wether the poems can actually be attributed to Khayyam remains as he was a known astronomer and mathematician, not a poet.
