Amarant The Flora and Fauna of Atlantis by a Lady Botanist is a beautiful and wonderful book, lavishly illustrated with color plates. In 1681 at the age of 30, Lady Elizabeth Hurnshaw journeyed to the Americas. A a result of misadventures, she found herself on an island called Amarantos which to this day is unmarked on any map and believed to have been the legendary land of Atlantis. She spent 20 years recording the flora and fauna, filling notebooks with beautiful illustrations. Eventually she and her son, the heir to Hurnshaw, were discovered by a sea captain off the coast of Africa and returned to Hurnshaw. However, she and her son disappeared months later under mysterious circumstances, never to be heard from again. Left behind were her diaries and notebooks.
300 years later, the editor of this book, Una Woodruff, an antiquarian artist, found herself at Hurnshaw and discovered the notebooks in the dilapidated library. This book is the result of that find.
