The Fifth Column by Ernest Hemingway is his only full length play. The play was written in the fall and early winter of 1937. The title refers to the Spanish rebel statement in the fall of 1936 that they had four column advancing on Madrid and a Fifth Column of sympathizers inside the city to attack from the rear. The play was written during wartime and is about counter espionage in Madrid. The book was originally published by Scribners in the U.S. in 1938 and then in London in 1939. This is the London 1968 reissue edition. NOTE: this is the play, The Fifth Column only and does not include "49 Stories" as later reprints did.
