This is a near fine (almost like new) 2 volume set of collectible leather bound hardcovers. 1983 Time Life Collector's Library of the Civil War series. NOTE: all 3 page edges tipped in gold gilt and top edge is showing wearing of the gilt on both volumes, see photo. Other two outer page edges barely any wearing of gilt. This collectors edition has been photographically reproduced from the 1866 first edition, thus preserving the authenticity of the original including typographical errors and irregularities. Black leather bound hardcover with gold lettering and embossed illustration of foot soldiers on front cover. Gold tip page edges with red ribbon attached bookmark. Marbled endpapers front and back. Bound in fine sewn binding for aesthetics and durability, the binding is tight and straight. The pages inside are still crisp and clean with no markings seen. Original bookplate that accompanied the edition is affixed inside front cover. Includes original accompanying pamphlet. Octavo book size or 6" x 9". Includes original collectors pamphlet.

This edition of The Collectors Library of the Civil War is a 2 volume set, A Rebel War Clerks Diary Vol 1 & 2. The author, John Beauchamp Jones spent much of his life striving for literary fame but only gained it after his death. He wrote novels prior to becoming a clerk in the Confederate War Dept. in 1861. The diary was a record of Confederate activities and battles. Post war, Jones re-worked the diary but added assertions became a weakness. Certain passages were rewritten without proper regard for chronology. Regardless, the diary has become one of the definitive works and established his literary career.
