This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 1996 Henry Holt Publishing. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The inside pages are crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Red hardcover boards under jacket feature black quarter trim with silver lettering along spine. The accompanying dust jacket is still clean and shiny with only very light shelf wear corners/edges, BUT is neatly price clipped inside front jacket flap. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 736 pages including index.
John Marshall Definer of a Nation by Jean Edward Smith is a portrait of a remarkable man. Lawyer, scholar and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1801. For the following 35 years, Marshall molded the court into a major force. Prior to his appearance, the Court was little more than a clause in the Constitution and a gaggle of conflicting opinions. But the author tells more than his Court influences in the book. It is a masterful biography of the man, his who also loved good food and animated table talk. Working from primary sources, the book weaves a masterful portrait from youth to his rise to the Court.
