The inside pages are still crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Black hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine and feature gold lettering along spine. The accompanying dust jacket is still clean and shiny with only a hint of shelf wear. Smaller hardcover, crown octavo book size or 5" x 8" with 229 pages.
The 1863 Laws of War is subtitled Articles of War General Orders No. 100 Army Regulations. The armies of the American Civil War were governed by sophisticated rules. This book contains the four most important sets of rules, together with explaining the history and significance of each. Part l contains the Articles of War, 102 disciplinary rules ranging from the use of profanity in church to safeguards in war. They were updated in 1861 and 1863, enacted by Congress and had the full force of the law. Part ll of the book is General Orders including the famous "Lieber Code" which was written at Lincoln's request to address behavior on the battlefield.
