Castles of Steel by Robert K. Massie is subtitled Britain, Germany and the Winning of the Great War at Sea. In this book the author elevates the historical importance the role of sea power had in winning the Great War. The predominate image of World War One is of mud, trenches, machine guns and poison gas. But, with all its sacrifice, trench warfare did not win the war or lose it. Over the span of 4 years, the lines on the Western Front scarcely moved. For the true story the author looks to the sea. On the eve of the war in 1914, Great Britain and Germany possessed the two greatest navies the world has known. When the war came, fleets of dreadnoughts, castles of steel, hurled massive shells. From the North Sea and the Pacific, to the Falklands, the battle raged. When the Germans were suffocated by a naval blockade, they orchestrated a strike against the mighty British Navy. The result was Jutland, a clash of 58 dreadnoughts, each the home of 1000 men. This riveting narrative is accompanied by a vintage photo spread of historic characters.
