This is a very good set of 2 volume hardcovers. Scribners Publishing, believed to be a reprint originally published 1897. Copyright pages have not been updated, a common practice in reprints. This is believed to be an early 1900'a reprint. Each volume is very good inside with the bindings being tight and straight. The inside pages on each are very good, clean with no serious foxing or tanning. Top page edges on both are tipped in gold gilt. Navy blue hardcover boards are very good with light shelf wear and the gold lettering along spine is very good, clean and legible. Each volume is crown octavo book size or 5" x 8".
Carlyle, a Scottish historian and philosopher, covered politics, role of people in society, education and more. It was given at his appointment as Rector of University of Edinburgh. He reflected on the importance of education, social responsibility and the role of government. His life in London began in 1834 where he lived in Chelsea which was a center of intellectual and literary figures. Carlyle was a central figure in Victorian England and hosted guests such as Dickens and Tennyson. His most famous works include The French Revolution A History written in 1837. Each volume has an illustrated frontispiece with original tissue guard in place.
