Mawson's Will by Lennard Bickel is subtitled The Greatest Polar Survival Story Ever Written. It includes a foreword by Sir Edmund Hillary. In 1911 Australian Douglas Mawson choose not to accompany Robert Scott on his trip to the South Pole. Instead, he set out on an expedition to chart 1500 miles of the Antarctic coastline and claim it for the British Crown. He was very experienced but nothing prepared him for this trek. He started out with 2 companion and two sled dog teams. They encounter treacherous mountains, crevasse filled glaciers, and 60 mph winds. Six weeks into the journey one companion and one dog sled team vanished into a "bottomless crevasse" along with tents and equipment. After losing his second companion and the remaining dogs, Mawson fought his way back from what seemed certain death. It is an unforgettable story of courage, spirit and dedication to science.
