Home Comforts The Art and Science of Keeping House by Cheryl Mendelson is a readable and enjoyable explanation for beginners and experts of the domestic arts. Choosing fabrics, caring for books, making a fire in the fireplace, setting up reading lights, cleaning, and everything else one might do to care for their family and home is reviewed. The author grew up on a farm in the hills of PA, learning from her mother, aunts, and grandmothers among others. She appreciated domestic customs and how they relate to a sense of comfort and identity. She grew up to become a lawyer, philosopher, homemaker, mother and wife. The book addresses the meanings as well as the methods with a sense of history and value. Chapters include; Serving Meals, Kitchen Culture, Cold Comfort, Bread and Honey, Safe Food, and that is just in the Food section. Other sections include; Cloth, Cleanliness, Daily Life, Sleep, Shelter and Formalities. The book is both entertaining and thoughtful.
