The Dig Tree by Sarah Murgatroyd is subtitled A True Story of Bravery, Insanity and the Race to Discover Australia's Wild Frontier. Back in 1860, Lewis and Clark had already blazed the Oregon Trail, Kit Carson opened up trade routes, and John Ross was penetrating the Canadian Arctic and Livingston was busy in Africa. Meanwhile, the continent of Australia sat mostly undisturbed. This book is the true story of how 18 unexperienced explorers departed Melbourne with a throng of well-wishers. They were on a mission to chart the Australian wilderness. There was a police officer, a camel handler, an American fortune hunter and a German naturalist among other. Only one would come back alive with an unbelievable story of perseverance, idiocy, and courage. The Dig Tree itself marks the center point of their journey. To the day the book was written, it bore the scares of the expedition and a message remained carved into its trunk; "Dig Under 3FT NW".
