Intelligence in War by John Keegan is subtitled Knowledge of the Enemy from Napoleon to Al-Qaeda. The author delves into the heart of important conflicts to develop a powerful argument about military intelligence. In fiction, spies make a glamorous figure, but historically, intelligence has been vital to military victories. Examples in history include how Horatio Nelson was hot on the heels of Napoleon's fleet in the Mediterranean and never knew it. Conversely, Stonewall Jackson was able to compensate for Confederate disadvantages with detailed maps of the Appalachians. Espionage has historically changed the face of battle such as the Japanese attack at Midway which was thwarted by an early warning. The book is a remarkable study of warfare.
