This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 1998 RiverHead Books. NOTE: this copy is near fine except for first page has small notch cut out top right corner where previous bookstore sticker was placed. Rest of inside pages are still crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Brown hardcover boards under jacket are near fine with barely a hint of shelf wear and feature black quarter trim and gold title lettering along spine and front cover. The accompanying dust jacket is very good with only very light shelf wear. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 691 pages including Dramatic Personae and chronology.
An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears is a historical fiction murder mystery set in 17th century Oxford. Oxford is the intellectual seat of the country, a place of great scientific, religious and political ferment. When a fellow of New College is found dead, a young woman is accused of his murder. Four "witnesses" each tell their own version of the death. Only one reveals the actual truth.
