Defining The Wind by Scott Huler is subtitled The Beaufort Scale and How a 19th Century Admiral Turned Science Into Poetry. After discovering the Beaufort Wind Scale, the author embarked on a journey over land and sea into a fascinating world of explorers, mariners, scientists and writers. He went in search of Admiral Francis Beaufort himself who was the assumed author of The Beaufort Wind Scale. But to truly define such, the author had to delved deep into history and historical figures such as Daniel DeFoe and Darwin among others. Hurler's research landed him in a fascinating and rich period of history. Modern science was being defined. Beaufort embodied the scientific networker of his time along with Anders Celsius and others. As an example, Beaufort was tasked with the search for a naturalist to accompany The Beagle, and he named a young naturalist named Darwin.
