The binding is tight and straight. Blue hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine with barely a hint of shelf wear. The accompanying dust jacket is clean and shiny with only very light shelf wear. Super octavo book size or 7" x 11" with 644 pages including index.
A New History of the American West by Richard White embodies the theme that as succeeding groups have occupied he American West and shaped the land, they have done so without regard for present inhabitants. Like the cowboys herding the cattle, they cared little about how their activities affected others. This book is more about the creation of the region rather than the vanishing of the frontier. It draws on minority history, gender relations and labor history as well as other sources. The book is a contrast of traditional views on how the West was settled.
