1863 The Rebirth of a Nation by Joseph E. Stevens captures a remarkable moment in history when the tide of the war turned from the Confederacy to the Union. The year began with a demoralized Union Army. The North was weary of the war. The Confederacy seemed on the path to victory. But, by years end, Lincoln triumphed at the ballot box, Grant and Sherman were mounting victories, and the nation was being reborn. The year was a watershed moment and the author used personal letters, diaries, memoirs and archives to recount the events. Historic characters such as Grant and Lee, Lincoln and Davis, Sherman and Longstreet are vividly portrayed. But also portrayed are the stories of the lesser-knowns, soldiers, civilians, farm owners, aristocrats and politicians. It is a portrait of a nation on the brink and the pivotal year that saved it.
