This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. Reprint Random House 1990's. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The pages inside are crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Red hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine with barely a hint of shelf wear and feature gold lettering along spine. The accompanying dust jacket is very good with only very light shelf wear. Standard medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 318 pages including index. Illustrated maps front and back endpapers.

This volume opens as the war is escalating in devastation. The sudden glare of Chickamauga and the Union great day at Missionary Rider followed by Sherman's destruction of Meridian, leave the South facing the aftermath even before the war was over. Against this backdrop, rising opposition on both sides leaves Lincoln and Davis trying to hold their people together. Lincoln cements his people with the Gettysburg Address. Davis appeals to his Southern population. Each leaders concludes that the war must go on.
