This is a very good 3 volume set of hardcovers. 1980 Knopf Publishing. Each volume is very good inside and out. NOTE: the bindings are tight and straight on each BUT Volume One-The American Language has a mild binding crack between pages 276-277. Pages are still tight to binding but notable binding crack needs disclosed. The pages in each are very clean and actually crisp. Black hardcover boards under each dust jacket are very good with only very light shelf wear. The accompanying dust jacket are graded very good given age, they are clean and still holding shine but do have light shelf wear corners/edges. Each volume is medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 767, 738, and 890 pages respectively.
The American Language by H.L. Mencken was first published in 1919. This is the fourth edition corrected, enlarged and rewritten. From the dust jacket; "A thoroughly scientific treatise on the development of American-English, it is at the same time an extremely diverting piece of reading, full of odd stuff to be found nowhere else." There is no other book on the subject which even remotely approaches the value and scope of this one."
