This is a very good hardcover with dust jacket. 21st Printing 1978 Knopf Publishing Definitive Edition. This copy is still crisp and clean inside. NOTE: previous owners name neatly written inside front cover (see photo). No other marks etc seen inside. The rest of pages are crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Tan cloth hardcover boards are also very good with only a hint of shelf wear and feature courtroom illustration front that carries over to spine where title and author lettering appear. The accompanying dust jacket is very good with light shelf wear mostly to back. Crown octavo book size or 5.5" x 8" with 340 pages.
Along with The Castle, The Trial is chiefly responsible for the posthumous fame and popularity of Franz Kafka. It is the story of a respectable banker who suddenly finds himself on trial for something he cannot even get information about. Arrested and charged, he must spend his life defending himself. The first translation did not include all of the text Kafka left in the manuscript. In this new and definitive German edition, Kafka's closest friend and literary executor restored many passages. The present English version of The Trial contains that restored material.
