The same 5 men boarded the Channel steamer and crossed to Calais where they entrained for Paris. When the train reached Paris, it was revealed that one man was a detective from Scotland Yard on the trail of a fortune of stolen gems; one man was a murderer, and another a corpse ! Hailed as a fine detective novel in the spirit of the Moonstone and Hound of the Baskervilles, it is considered the best of the authors novels. This is a complete unabridged reprint of the 1888 second edition.
