The Magnificent Mitscher by Theodore Taylor provides a first class biography of World War Two air admiral Mark Mitscher who was legendary for developing an entirely new concept of war at sea. His skills as a carrier tactician and genius for leading men helped create the greatest striking weapon in history - a carrier force that could put up 1000 planes in half an hour along with a tack force that sank a thousand ships and destroyed the Japanese Air Force. He was not widely known because he shunned public attention and destroyed his papers shortly before his death in 1947. The author traces Mitscher's career from its beginning in 1916, when he became one of the first U.S. Navy pilots.
