Nothing Like It In The World by Stephen Ambrose is subtitled The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869. It is an account of engineering, vision and courage. The book was the follow up by Ambrose's Undaunted Courage, the exploration of Lewis and Clark. It is the history of the investors, the politicians, the engineers, the surveyors, and the laborers who did the backbreaking and dangerous work. The Union had won the war but Lincoln would not survive to see his vision of the railroad. At its peak, the workforce, mostly Chinese on the Central Pacific and Irish on the Union Pacific, would approach 15,000 workers. The epic venture ended with the driving of a golden spike at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869.
