The Tiananmen Papers has been compiled by Zhang Liang with editors Andrew J. Nathan and Perry Link. It is subtitled "The Chinese Leaderships Decision to Use Force Against Their Own People - In Their Own Works." On June 3-4th of 1989, Chinese troops violently crushed the pro-democracy demonstrations, the largest in the history of the regime. The story had previously been told from the viewpoint of students demonstrators and the foreign press corps. This book was the first to provide the story of the 1989 demonstrations as told for the first time in the words of the leaders who made the decision to crush them. It is a collection of internal documents that tell of how the growing movement split the ruling elite into factions that sought radically different solutions to the unrest The material reveals how the decisions were not made by formal political institutions but by the eight "Elders" along with their crucial meetings. Dialogue was considered by by the majority of the Chinese Standing Committee and may have led to political reform, but in the end martial law was enacted and the Committee recommendations were disregarded. Includes Afterword by Orville Schell.
