The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck won the Pulitzer Prize for literature in 1940. Destined for success and popularity, the novel was released in 1939. It tells the story of the miseries of a family become migrants. Given that the novel was published in 1939, and America was still feeling the pain of the Great Depression, it seemed odd that a novel dealing with pain and misery would rise to the top of literature. Yet, it became one of the greatest literary classics of all time.
