This is a very good hardcover with dust jacket. 1997 Henry Holt Publishing. This copy is very good inside and out. NOTE: previous donated memory bookplate inside front cover (see photo) and we noticed some pages that have underlined sentence or checkmark in margin (see example photo). BUT majority of inside pages are unmarked and they are very clean. The binding is tight and straight. Tan hardcover boards under jacket feature black quarter trim and are very good with barely a hint of shelf wear. The accompanying dust jacket is also very good, clean and still shiny with only a hint of shelf wear. Standard medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 392 pages including index.
A Life Wild and Perilous by Robert M. Utley is subtitled Mountain Men and The Paths to The Pacific. Early in the 19th century, mountain men emerged with the experience and knowledge of the Trans-Mississippi West. Thought Lewis and Clark blazed a corridor in 1803-1805, the West remained wild until trappers and traders such as Kit Carson and others opened paths through the wilderness of the American West. This is their story and of them and their innovation and survival. The book is illustrated with black and white drawings along with 16 pages of full color maps from Peter Dana of the University of Texas.
