A Flame of Pure Fire Jack Dempsey and The Roaring '20s is from the author of "The Boys of Summer", Roger Kahn. For 7 years after World War One, Jack Dempsey was the heavyweight champion of the world. He was as wild and raucous as the Roaring Twenties when Al Capone ran free and jazzmen trumpeted at jazz joints. This book is an extraordinary story of a man and a country. Dempsey embodied America, rising from hobo, fighter, lover, millionaire and eventually gentleman of rare generosity. While the author focuses on the 1920's he also portrays Dempsey in his childhood of poverty, his trial for avoiding service in WWl, and his role in Hollywood and the restaurant business.
