This is a very good hardcover. 1970 Oxford University Press Illustrated Dickens series. This copy is very good inside and out. The pages are actually still crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Brown cloth hardcover boards are also very good with only a hint of shelf wear. Crown octavo book size or 5" x 8" with 880 pages. Illustrations by "Phiz" with an Intro by Sir Osbert Sitwell.
This edition of Bleak House by Charles Dickens contains the illustrations by Phiz. Phiz, the pseudonym of Hablot Knight Browne, was a close friend of Dickens and they worked together over several decades. Dickens even traveled with Browne as he looked for sites and scenes of inspiration.
At the centre of the plot of Bleak House is a mystery surrounding the beautiful and haughty Lady Dedlock. The discovery of her guilty secret by a cunning lawyer sets in motion a series of tragic events, investigated by the detective Bucket. But, it is also a novel about the injustices of the out-of-date English legal system. The other great theme of the novel is that of hypocritical philanthropists who bestow charity on far away lands at the expense of family and neighbors. Intro written by Sir Osbert Sitwell.
