This is a very good hardcover, NO slipcase, slipcase missing. 1940 Heritage Press Edition. This copy is still very good inside and out. The pages are very good and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Illustrated hardcover boards in floral design have maroon cloth quarter trim and are very good BUT there is fading along the spine. NOTE: previous owners bookplate neatly place inside front cover. Super octavo book size or 7" x 10" with 729 pages.
This edition of The Old Wives Tale by Arnold Bennett has been illustrated by John Austen with an Intro by Frank Swinnerton and a Preface by the author. The novel is regarded as one of the author's best works. It is a narrative of two sisters, Constance and Sophia, from their youth to old age as they are working in their mother's shop. The historical period is set from 1940 to about 1905. The book is divided into 4 parts. Part One is Mrs Baines (the mother), Part Two is Constance, the more down-to-earth sister, Part Three is Sophia, the impatient and impulsive sister who elopes after stealing money from her aunt, and Part Four is What Life Is.
