This is a very good smaller hardcover. 1952 Viking Press. This copy is good, clean and solid inside and out. The pages are very good and clean inside. NOTE: there is the beginning of binding separation inside front cover at title/blank page BUT the pages are still tight to binding (see photo). It should weather well if handled with a bit of care. The binding overall is very good, tight and straight. Grey hardcover boards have tan quarter trim and the lettering front cover and spine is still good with only a hint of fading. This is the "portable" edition from Viking Press, with 16 chapters the final chapter being The Running of Rome in the 15th Century and Conclusion of the Whole Work, but smaller size designed to be carried around in pocket or purse. Hence, the text is smaller as expected. 12mo book size or 4.75" x 7" with 691 pages. Illustrated map endpapers front and back. It includes a Preface and Introduction.
