This is a very good hardcover, NO dust jacket, jacket missing. Circa 1950's Modern Library. This copy is very good inside and out. There is light natural tanning to pages from age but they are clean inside. The binding is tight and straight. Blue hardcover boards are good, NOTE: there is mild small fraying to hardcover boards top edge along spine but overall they are good with light shelf wear AND there is some fading to lettering along spine but Modern Library logo and lettering front cover are very good. Smaller hardcover, crown octavo book size or 5" x 8" with 732 pages.
This edition from Modern Library of Henry David Thoreau's Walden also contains other writings. In addition to Walden the edition contains A Week on The Concord and Merrimack Rivers, The Allegash and East Branch, Walking, Civil Disobedience, A Plea for Captain John Brown and more.
Originally published in 1854, Walden or Life in the Wood by Henry David Thoreau is the author's reflection on living a simple life in the woods of nature. It is somewhat a statement of independence, social experiment, and spiritual awakening. It is set on Walden Pond where Thoreau built a cabin and lived there over the course of 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days. The land upon where the cabin was built was owned by fellow author and friend of Thoreau's, Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Modern Library began publishing series of books in 1917. they were extremely popular, especially with students, as they were copies of great literature and topics that were priced for the general public. The publishing firm of Boni Liveright started the series, as the idea stemmed from Albert Boni. The first title published was The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde. Early editions were published in "pocket book" size for easy carrying to read anywhere and they were bound in leatherette. In 1927, Random House was borne out of Modern Library and pictorial dust jackets were introduced to the series, along with hardcover boards. As publishing changed, Modern Library fell to the wayside but was "reintroduced" in the 1970's. Early editions are collectibles and later titles remain favorites as many collect Modern Library editions of all ages.
