This is a very good hardcover. 1945 Harper Publishing. This copy is very good inside and out. There is only very light natural tanning of pages from age. The pages are clean, NOTE: previous owners name nearly written in script inside front cover, first blank page. The binding is tight and straight. Olive green hardcover boards are also very good given age with only light shelf wear corner/edges. Crown octavo book size or 5.5" x 8.5" with 464 pages including index.
Ancestor's Brocades The Literary Debut of Emily Dickinson by Millicent Todd Bingham tells the story of the editing and publishing of the poets works. Only a few poems, which appeared anonymously, were published in her lifetime. Her "literary debut" occurred four years after her death. In 1896 three volumes containing 449 poems were edited by the authors mother, Mabel Louis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson and published in Boston by Roberts Brothers. A total of 555 poems were printed 10 years after Dickinson's death. The book tells of the compiling and editing of the poems researched from the author's mother and other journals. Basically the book tells of an episode in American literary history. Emily's correspondence, letters, a prologue and aftermath are included.
