Preserving Yellowstone's Natural Conditions by James A. Pritchard is subtitled Science and the Perception of Nature. From the dust jacket; "American ecologists seeking to influence the founders of the National Park Service had hoped that protection of the parks would create preserves where "natural conditions" could exist in an idealized pre-settlement state." Ironically, to secure a functioning park, officials had to provide intense management to preserve: "nature at work."
The author demonstrates that even the most up-to-date policy cannot reckon with public expectations, and animal behavior. When Yellowstone stopped feeding the bears to achieve naturally regulated populations, the public bemoaned the loss. But the bears had associated food with humans and soon became a menace.
The author believes restoring natural conditions for bears and other animals is a sound practice. Yellowstone is an ecological anchor he argues and presents opportunity for examine natural processes that exist and should remain natural.
