This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 1988 Thames and Hudson Publishing. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The pages are crisp and clean w no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Gold hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine with barely a hint of shelf wear. Women of the Raj by Margaret MacMillan looks at the whole of Britain's three and a half centuries of involvement in India, but the book especially looks at the period of empire from mid-19th century to 1947. Letters, memoirs and novels from women, along with interviews and the experiences of the author own grandmother, bring together the role of women of the Raj. The goal was to create a replica of British society in the face of almost insurmountable difficulties. Women were exiled in a strange land surrounded by people, customs, and religion that seemed alien. Often on the move, they was no "putting down" roots. Heat, illness, and loneliness the book examines how they adjusted and survived. There are happy and tragic experiences, and fine illustrations (57 in all) bring their situations to life again.
