This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 1996 Houghton Mifflin Publishing. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The pages are crisp and clean w no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Tan hardcover boards under jacket feature black quarter trim with gold lettering along spine and are also near fine with barely a hint of shelf wear. The accompanying dust jacket is still clean and shiny with only a hint of shelf wear. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 734 pages.

Previous books on Civil War history delved into victory or defeat, military skills, and resources. Intelligence had largely been ignored. Lincoln called it the most difficult problem the Union faced. Intelligence was not addressed in previous history books not so much because it was not important but rather because so little was known. The author spent near 40 years uncovering research about Civil War intelligence to write this book. It was the first book to examine in detail the impact, importance and sometimes radical intelligence mechanisms used in the war. The book features detailed maps and it extensively illustrated too.
