This book was based on more than 1,200 letters and diaries written by more than 400 Confederate officers and enlisted men. It is a compelling history of Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during its final year, May 1864 to April 1865. It is organized chronologically and provides a view of experiences in camp, march and combat. This was the first book to focus on Army of Northern Virginia and its men through their own experiences.
