Never before in history did such a large proportion of the population leave home for war and produce such a detailed record of its experiences in the form of diaries, correspondence, and other papers than was produced during the Civil War. This book was based on more than 1,200 letters and diaries written by more than 400 Confederate officers and enlisted men. It is a compelling history of Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during its final year, May 1864 to April 1865. It is organized chronologically and provides a view of experiences in camp, march and combat. This was the first book to focus on Army of Northern Virginia and its men through their own experiences.
