This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover. 1983 Franklin Library standard edition NOT the full leather-bound fine binding edition. Franklin Library published collectors edition in fine bindings with full leather, silk moire fabric endpapers etc. They also printed "standard" editions with some of the fine binding appointments such as gold gilt pages edges, simulated leather hardcovers, satin bookmarks and fine sewn bindings. This edition is one of the standard edition featuring the gold gilt page edges, simulated leather cover and attached bookmark. The binding is a fine durable sewn binding. BUT this is not the fine binding leather-bound edition. Nonetheless is is a handsome edition with the aforementioned appointments. This copy is crisp and clean inside and out. The binding is tight and straight. Black hardcover boards feature the gold design front and spine with all three page edges tipped in gold. Attached satin bookmark. Octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 530 pages.
The Education of Henry Adams was the Pulitzer Prize winner for autobiography in 1919. This edition is finely illustrated with portraits of leading figure of the day. It is an autobiography telling of the struggles of Henry Adams to come to terms with the oncoming 20th century. Educational theory and practice during the 19th century are critiqued. The coming 20th century was going to be a great change from that of the youth of Henry Adams and the social and political changes and upheaval are examined.
