Darwin and The Beagle by Alan Moorehead is an account of Darwin's 5 year expedition on the HMS Beagle as it traveled the oceans. Darwin set sail on the Beagle in December of 1831. He was 22 years old and the naturalist on the ship. Most of the trip was sailing around South America where Darwin collected and observed plants and animals. One of his most key observations were finches on the Galapagos Islands who were similar to those on the mainland but showed characteristics that enabled them to gather food more easily in their specific habitat. He collected specimens of them and these, along with a record of observations, led to the theory of evolution through natural selection. This edition is extensively and finely illustrated with black and white drawings along with colour plates.
