This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 2002 Cooper Square Press. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The pages are crisp and clean w no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Black hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine w barely a hint of shelf wear. The accompanying dust jacket is clean and shiny with only a hint of shelf wear. Standard medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 258 pages including index. Illustrated maps front and back endpapers.
La Salle by Donald S. Johnson is subtitled A Perilous Odyssey from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. René Robert Cavalier (titled Sieur de La Salle) was a man with a vision. He set out to explore, claim and colonize the wilds of North American in the name of France. He traveled thousands of miles over rivers, lakes, and land. He encountered hostile tribes, blizzards, starvation and disease and survived. Finally, La Salle became the first European to travel the full course of the Mississippi River to its mouth and determined where it poured forth into the Gulf of Mexico. He claimed the Mississippi River, and all the land, for France. In his honor, King Louis XlV named the land "Louisiana". This was the most up-to-date biography of La Salle and his explorations at the time.
