Dan Rice The Most Famous Man You've Never Heard of by David Carlyon is a biography of Rice's roles in "show business". Song-and-dance man, Skakespearian jester, circus showman, and American humorist, he tried whatever came to hand. Then he joined the glittering world of the Circus. He rose to prominence as a talking clown who tossed out quips, quoted Shakespeare, sang and more. He labeled himself "The Great American Humorist". He spoke of the most important issues of the day and became one of the most famous men in America, seen by more people than anyone else of the time. He rose to prominence by engaging his audience. But, then "polite" society propelled by a vague sense of "refinement" began to deem such amusements inappropriate. Soon, his participation with a rowdy audience came to be called crude. Even a civil threat. Dan Rice, famous for adult jokes and cutting satire, became "Old Uncle Dan" and cultural history changed the portrait.
