This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover. Originally published in fine binding appointments by Franklin Library in 1972, this edition is a reprint of that with special arrangement for Penguin Books London. In translation that means the title page still states Franklin Library as not changed when published by Penguin Books in 1981. The "look" of fine binding is matched with gold gilt page edges, black hardcover boards with gold design and lettering along the spine, BUT the Franklin Library 1971 TRUE collectors edition would be bound in genuine leather with silk moire fabric endpapers etc. This edition does NOT have those addition fine binding appointments but nonetheless is a handsome edition mimicking the look. The pages inside are still crisp and clean w no markings seen. The binding is done in fine sewn binding and is tight and straight. Black hardcover boards with gold design and lettering are near fine with only a hint of shelf wear. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 749 pages.
This reprint edition of The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio has been translated by G.H. McWilliams and features the woodcuts of José Narro as published in the original 1972 Franklin Library edition. The book is a collection of short stories told by 7 women and 3 men as they shelter outside Florence to escape the Black Death. There are tales of wit and life lessons along with romance tragic and otherwise.
